Among all the subcompact SUVs currently available on the market, the Crosstrek is undoubtedly the most enjoyable. Let's say the model has strong arguments in its favor such as its legendary all-wheel-drive system or its off-road driving capabilities. It's also one of the most spacious vehicles in its category.

The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek comes in the form of a new generation that is more elevated and refined than the previous one. The manufacturer took the opportunity to clean up the lineup by definitively eliminating the manual transmission and the plug-in hybrid version.

Range and Pricing

The Subaru Crosstrek is not the most affordable model in its category, but it's far from being the most expensive with a starting price of $31,663. The price increases to $34,863 with the Touring version, which offers a plethora of additional features. On the other hand, the Onyx version offers a darker look and a more powerful engine. That's why its starting price is $36,663. The Limited version offers a more luxurious finish and high-end options for $39,663. Finally, it's the legendary Wilderness version that sits at the top of the range with a starting price of $40,663.

Category and Competition

The Subaru Crosstrek belongs to the subcompact SUV category, a segment that has evolved considerably in recent years. Previously, everyone rushed to compact SUVs, but prices have risen considerably, which is why subcompact SUVs have seen a significant increase in popularity. As for the Crosstrek, it stands out thanks to its high level of off-road driving competence and advanced technologies.

Rivals: Buick Encore GX, Chevrolet Trailblazer, Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Jeep Renegade, Kia Niro, Kia Seltos, Mazda CX-30, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, Mitsubishi RVR, Nissan Kicks, Toyota Corolla Cross, Volkswagen Taos

Design and Technologies

Although we're getting a new generation, the Subaru Crosstrek retains essentially the same shape, which is a good thing since the small SUV from the Japanese manufacturer has always been popular. In fact, we're talking more about an evolution, and that's what makes it so interesting. Each version of the model offers small aesthetic exclusivities. However, it's clearly the Wilderness version that stands out with its raised suspension and orange elements.

The interior design of the Subaru Crosstrek is absolutely stunning, especially with the 11.6-inch multimedia system screen found starting from the Touring version. The display is clear, and navigation is smooth. The brand's designers paid a lot of attention to details inside, and it's something to be appreciated.

Performance

The small SUV from the Japanese manufacturer offers two engine options for 2024, starting with the classic 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. It delivers 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. It's paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that sends power to all four wheels. I know, it's not particularly impressive, but I promise you it's enough since the Crosstrek is not a particularly heavy vehicle to begin with. However, if you really want a more spirited drive, there's another option. The Japanese SUV also offers a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that develops 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. This one is also paired with a CVT, and all-wheel drive is standard. Of course, this is the engine found in the higher-end versions of the small SUV from the Japanese manufacturer.

Weaknesses

The price rises quickly from one version to another. Subaru no longer offers a plug-in hybrid version, which is unfortunate.

Strengths

The off-road performance of the Wilderness version is simply amazing. The small SUV from the Japanese manufacturer offers one of the best all-wheel-drive systems in its category. The 2.5-liter engine allows for a significantly more dynamic drive.

Signature Element

When we think of subcompact SUVs, we think of the city. However, when it comes to outdoor activities, it's the Subaru Crosstrek that comes to mind, and that's why the model is so popular.

Final Word

The sports utility vehicle (SUV) category has been broad for a few years now. There are many models that are barely more competent than a car, if at all. Fortunately, there are still models that honor the segment, as is the case with the Crosstrek. The small SUV from the Japanese manufacturer is perfectly capable of meeting your everyday needs and taking you wherever your adventures may lead. Plus, you're likely to have a lot of fun behind the wheel, which is why it's one of the vehicles I highly recommend in its category. In my opinion, the Subaru Crosstrek ticks all the boxes.
